Mission, Vision, and Values

The Center for Aging Research was established in 1997 through funding from three sources--Indiana University, an interdisciplinary consortium of IU Health Schools, and the Regenstrief Institute. Initial funding was used to develop a communications network among scientists engaged in aging research, to fund aging research pilot studies for IU faculty, and recruit new faculty and support their research career development.

In addition to the founding and current director, Christopher Callahan, MD, the core faculty has grown to include 12 M.D. and Ph.D. researchers. The center has developed professional relationships with more than 20 other faculty Affiliated Scientists from multiple Indiana University schools and campuses. For guidance and counsel, we established a Community Advisory Board and an External Scientific Advisory Board.

Mission

The mission of the Indiana University Center for Aging Research is to improve the quality of life for older adults through interdisciplinary research.

We have adopted the National Institute on Aging definition of aging research: "biomedical, behavioral, and/or social research on the aging process as well as on the diseases and other special problems and needs of older people."

Vision

Our vision is to become the leader in research that improves the health care provided to older adults by generalist physicians. We believe national leadership will emanate from designing, implementing, and testing innovations on a local level.

Values

The faculty and staff of the Indiana University Center for Aging Research value scientific excellence and integrity in research. Excellent science that is relevant to the problems and needs of older people in Indiana is highly valued. We also value a collegial and mutually supportive work environment that welcomes diversity, creativity, and teamwork.

The Indiana University Center for Aging Research continues to build capacity for aging research, link arms with other disciplines, create new systems of care for older adults, and reach out to practicing physicians, patients, and the surrounding community. We join other schools, departments, divisions, programs and centers at Indiana University who are working together to help older adults age successfully.
