Regenstrief Institute for Health Care

Relationship with the IU Center for Aging Research

Despite the influx of intramural and extramural support, it is unlikely that the Center for Aging Research would have achieved its remarkable growth since 1997 without the support of the Regenstrief Institute for Health Care. The Institute has provided the critical mass of scientists and the intellectual community that allowed us to compete successfully for grants and recruits. The Institute leadership, including Clement J. McDonald, MD, William Tierney, MD, Morris Weinberger, PhD, and Leonard Betley have provided excellent counsel and advice in strategic planning. In addition, funding from the Regenstrief Institute has supported the salary of research staff including data managers, statisticians, and grant managers. Perhaps as important, the Institute provided space to grow. In a sense, the Center for Aging Research was grafted onto the Regenstrief Institute and was able to bear fruit much more quickly and effectively.

The relationship has been symbiotic as the Center for Aging Research has expanded the Institute's capacity to conduct health services and informatics research. Notably, the support of the Regenstrief Institute is ongoing. We continue to participate in multiple joint research projects and proposals, and we have collaborated in the recruitment of more than a half dozen scientists. We have every expectation that this alliance will not only continue, but will grow in magnitude and productivity. This successful relationship with the Regenstrief Institute will serve as a model as we look to expand our alliances with other research programs at Indiana University over the coming years.

Mission

Regenstrief Institute, Inc. is dedicated to the improvement of health through research that enhances the quality and cost-effectiveness of health care.

A Community of Scholars

The Regenstrief Institute for Health Care is a nationally recognized medical research organization dedicated to improving the quality of health care. Established in 1969, the Institute is supported by the Regenstrief Foundation, Inc. and is closely affiliated with the Indiana University School of Medicine and the Health and Hospital Corporation of Marion County, Indiana. The Institute is located on the campus of the School of Medicine in Indianapolis and its investigators are members of the School's faculty.

Medical Informatics

The physicians and scientists of the Regenstrief Institute are noted for the design and development of the Regenstrief Medical Records System (RMRS). The RMRS is an innovative electronic medical record that helps physicians manage the health care information needed to care for their patients. In development and daily use for over a quarter century, the RMRS currently integrates 25 years of inpatient and outpatient data. This wealth of information is continually growing through the participation of physicians throughout the country.

New Roads to Better Care

Scientists at Regenstrief engage in health services research, studies of physicians' practice patterns, studies related to aging, studies to identify new biostatistical techniques, and other areas of interest. The "laboratory" for many Regenstrief studies is the primary care practice associated with Wishard Health System (the public health system serving Marion County, Indiana). This practice and the RMRS create an exceptional opportunity to conduct various large clinical investigations. Regenstrief scientists are specialists in general medicine, endocrinology, geriatrics, medical sociology, pharmacy, medical economics, and biostatistics.
