IU GERIATRICS e-news for April 2005

The IU Geriatrics Program and the IU Center for Aging Research call your attention to a recent publication from the IMPACT Study. Chris Callahan, MD, and the IMPACT Investigators are the first to report that successful treatment of depression in older adults also improves their ability to perform tasks critical to independent living. In addition to the publication of study results in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society (see e-news PUBLICATIONS) media interviews with Chris found their way to WebMD Medical News , the AGS public education resource site Aging in the Know , and USA Today

GENI Principal Investigator Glenda Westmoreland traded in her MD/MPH for game show hostess credentials as she led PGY 1 residents in a game of “Geripardy” in two CARE Retreat sessions in February and March. In addition to testing their knowledge of geriatric medicine in the game show format, the residents interacted with a panel of older adults and heard a case presentation and mini lectures. IU presenters were Drs. Alejandro Arizmendi, Robin Beck, Youcef Sennour, Malaz Boustani , Rich Frankel, and PGY 1 Resident Andrew Overhiser.
The CARE Retreat increases knowledge about caring for older adults by primary care residents and faculty statewide and is an activity of the “Geriatrics Education Network of Indiana (GENI): A Statewide Dissemination of Geriatrics Education.”
