IU GERIATRICS electronic news for August 2003
The IU Geriatrics Program and the IU Center for Aging Research
congratulate our faculty members who have been recognized by the Division of General Internal Medicine and
Geriatrics for "outstanding" professional performance in 2002. Receiving "Outstanding Clinician Awards" were
Gregory Gramelspacher, MD, Jeff Darnell, MD, and Robin Beck, MD. "Outstanding Researcher Awards"
went to Colleen A. McHorney, PhD, and Chris Callahan, MD.
We welcome Youcef Sennour, MD, to the IUSM faculty. Youcef has been appointed Assistant Professor of Clinical
Medicine and has joined IU Medical Group as a geriatrician. His new duties include providing care to older adults in
the Center for Geriatric Medicine at Methodist Hospital, Acute Care for Elders (ACE) consults at Wishard and primary
care to residents of local nursing facilities. Youcef recently completed a two-year Geriatric Medicine Fellowship at
Indiana University and Regenstrief Institute. In his new role, Youcef looks forward to continuing "to improve the health
and quality of life of older patients and participating in the training of future geriatricians."
AWARDS
Congratulations to Michael Weiner, MD, MPH, who has been granted a K23 career award by the National Institute on Aging
for his project entitled,
"Recommendations of Inpatient Geriatrics Consultation."
The research component of his award will
support Mike's interest in measuring and improving aspects of implementation of geriatrics consultants' recommendations for
hospitalized older adults. Local mentors include Chris Callahan, MD, Steve Counsell, MD, Clem McDonald, MD, and Thomas Inui, MD.
The K23 award is part of the NIH initiative to attract talented research-oriented clinicians to the challenges of clinical
research and provides the opportunity to develop independent research skills and gain experience in advanced methods and
experimental approaches needed to conduct patient-oriented research.

Annual AcademyHealth Research Meeting held June 27-29 in Nashville, Tennessee.
The Annual Research Meeting convenes producers and users of health services research to examine emerging research issues
critical to the organization, financing and management of health services. AcademyHealth is the professional home for health
services researchers, policy analysts, and practitioners.
