The IU Geriatrics Program and the IU Center for Aging Research
congratulate
Kevin Terrell, DO, who has been awarded a Dennis W. Jahnigen Career Development Scholars Award for 2004. Funded
by the John A. Hartford Foundation and The Atlantic Philanthropies, the highly competitive, two-year faculty
development award of $200,000 provides a foundation upon which individuals can initiate and sustain a career in
geriatrics-oriented research and education within the surgical and related medical specialties.
Dr. Terrell's research project is entitled, "Computer-Assisted Decision Support to Increase the Safety of Prescribing
to Older Adults in the Emergency Department." Project mentors are Doug Miller, MD, Chris Callahan, MD, Rolly
McGrath, MD, and Carey Chisholm, MD. Dr. Terrell is an assistant professor in the IU Department of Emergency Medicine.

ALZHEIMER'S PRESENTATIONS
As the premier conference for dementia health care professionals, the Alzheimer's Association
12th National Alzheimer's Disease Education
Conference united more than 700 attendees during July in Philadelphia. More than 50 top-level professionals
presented caregivers with new techniques, strategies and information to enhance quality of care for those with
Alzheimer's disease. Mary Guerriero Austrom, PhD, organized and made three educational presentations during the
conference. They were:

The 9th International Conference on Alzheimer's Disease
and Related Disorders was presented by the Alzheimer's Association and held in Philadelphia July 17-22. The conference
was the largest gathering of Alzheimer researchers in history. More than 4,200 scientists from around the world shared
findings from 2,000 studies showcasing the newest treatment advances in Alzheimer's disease and steps toward prevention.

ANNOUNCEMENTS
The September 15th IU Geriatrics Conference features Barbara Kamholz, MD, clinical associate professor of psychiatry,
visiting Indiana University from the University of Michigan. Her presentation, "Evidence-Based Delirium Care for Hospital
Patients," will be in Wishard T2008 A&B from 7:30-8:30am.
Debra Helper, MD, will present "Swallowing Disorders in Older Adults and the Role of Esophageal Dilation as a Therapeutic
Manuever," at the September 29th IU Geriatrics Conference held in Wishard T2008 A&B from 7:30-8:30am. Dr. Helper is
associate professor of clinical medicine in the Division of Gastroenterology, IU School of Medicine.
