IU GERIATRICS electronic news for February 2002
The IU Geriatrics Program and the IU Center for Aging Research thank you for the support you've
shown for the newsletter and for contributing news items. What were some of this edition's contributors working on 25 years ago? On
faculty at McMaster University in Ontario, Dr. Neil Oldridge was completing "Non-Compliance in a Post Myocardial Infarction
Exercise Rehabilitation Program" for publication in the Canadian Medical Association Journal. Colleen McHorney was
studying the American prison system and American Indian history as a sociology major at the State University of New York in Oswego.
After graduating from Ann Arbor Pioneer High School, in 1977 Steve Counsell began studies in chemistry at Kenyon College in Ohio.

Colleen McHorney, PhD presented "Prospects and Problems in the Use of Item Response Theory in Health Outcomes Assessment"
at The Information Revolution, a Food and Drug Administration/Industry Workshop held in Bethesda, Maryland in January 2002.
Frederick Unverzagt, PhD will present "Cognitive correlates of functional status in elderly African Americans" this month at
the 30th Annual Meeting of the International Neuropsychological Society in Toronto, Canada. Co-authors of the poster and abstract are

AWARDS
The votes are in and the residents of the Barton, Lugar and Indiana Avenue apartments have spoken. During the residents' annual
awards banquet in December, they extended "special thanks and appreciation" by presenting their 2001 Community Service Award
to their Geriatrics Health Centers' faculty and staff. Honored at the residents' awards banquet were PSA's Doris Smith and
Deloris Bentley; Rita Martinez, RN; Jackie Sullivan, RN, GNP; Robin Beck, MD; Jeff Darnell, MD; and Glenda Westmoreland, MD.
LOCALLY, Usha Subramanian, MD is the Indianapolis site-PI of "Evaluation of a Nurse Case
Management Model for Chronic Heart Failure," a VISN-wide study headquartered at the Ann Arbor VA Medical Center and the
University of Michigan.
Colleen McHorney, PhD has been named Associate Director of the Health Services Research and Development Service at the
Roudebush VA Medical Center.
Steve Counsell, MD has been appointed to serve on the Wishard Strategic Planning Steering Committee by Robert B.
Jones, MD, PhD, CEO and Medical Director, Wishard Health Services.
UPCOMING PRESENTATIONS
Chris Callahan, MD will present "Redesigning Systems of Care to Improve the Care of Older Adults" in Medicine Grand Rounds
on February 27th at 8:15am in Wishard's Myers Auditorium.
