Dr. Boling is Professor of Internal Medicine, Divisions of General Medicine and Geriatrics; Director, Long Term Care
Program, Medical College of Virginia of Virginia Commonwealth University; Richmond, Virginia. Please review this month's

Northwestern University School of Medicine, January 24, 2003, in Chicago.
Gregory Gramelspacher, MD, David Moller, PhD, and Mary Ciccarelli, MD, presented a workshop entitled, "Caring
for the Dying Poor: A Home-Based Educational Curriculum for Residents and Students" on Feb 7th at the 15th Annual Assembly
of the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine at the Royal Pacific Resort in Orlando, FL.
Malaz Boustani, MD, MPH, presented "Untangling Agitation: Looking Inside the World of Dementia" in the Dementia
Update Session at the 14th Annual Challenges in Geriatric Practice Conference held February 20-21, 2003 in Chapel Hill.
The conference was presented by the University of North Carolina School of Medicine Program on Aging and the Carolina
Geriatric Education Center.
Christopher Callahan, MD, presented "The Origins and Future of Geriatric Services Research" February 28 at the
Spring 2003 Seminar Series of the Program on Health Outcomes at University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. The seminar
series is a University-wide program whose purpose is to improve health outcomes through targeted research and
evidence-based education and practice.
PROFESSIONAL ACTIVITIES
Usha Subramanian, MD, MS, and Colleen A. McHorney, PhD, attended the 2003 National Meeting of the Veterans
Administration Health Services Research and Development Service February 12-14 in Washington, DC. The meeting brought
together researchers, clinicians and policy makers to spotlight current efforts and consider challenges and opportunities
posed by a diverse group of 25 million-plus US veterans who span five generations.
Linda S. Williams, MD, chaired the first-ever Outcomes Research Symposium at the American Stroke Association 28th
International Stroke Conference held February 13-14 in Phoenix. She also made a platform presentation, "Development of the
Stroke-specific Quality of Life (SS-QOL) Scale: Item and Domain Reduction." Co-authors were Colleen A. McHorney, PhD,
and Tim Stump, MS.
Holly Hendrickson, MD, passed the fall re-certification examination for the Geriatrics Certificate of Added
Qualifications. She is a primary care physician at Westside Health Center and a member of the IU Geriatrics Program's
Geriatrics Interest Group.
Colleen A. McHorney, PhD, attended the February 2003 session of the AHRQ Health Care Quality and Effectiveness
Study Section. The HCQER Study Section reviews R01/R18 and R03 grant applications related to the quality and
cost-effectiveness of health care, including clinical outcomes studies, as well as studies to develop/test quality measures,
methods, tools and indicators.
Steven Counsell, MD has accepted the invitation to join the Editorial Board and serve as one of 5 editors for the 6th
Edition of the Geriatrics Review Syllabus: A Core Curriculum in Geriatric Medicine. The "GRS" is a comprehensive
self-assessment program developed by the American Geriatrics Society and contains the latest developments in geriatric
medicine for those who wish to expand and update their knowlege and skills in the field.
Chris Callahan, MD, attended the SGIM Council Winter Retreat in San Diego February 6-7 and is serving a three-year
term as a member of the SGIM National Council.

Visiting Professor Peter Boling, MD, will present "Aging of the Organs: Physiologic and Anatomic Changes with Aging that
Impact Clinical Practice" at the VA Department of Medicine Clinical Staff Luncheon Conference at Noon, Tuesday, March 11,

Greg Gramelspacher, MD, will present grand rounds, "Palliative Care and Cancer," to the IU Cancer Center March 14,
7:30am in the Cancer Pavilion Education Center, RT 101.
The IU Geriatrics Conference on March 19 features Craig Wilson, MD, clinical geriatrician and director of St. Vincent
Geriatric Medicine Fellowship Program. He will present "Preventive Care in Older Adults" in Wishard T2008 A&B from 7:30-8:30am.
Join Aging Research Work in Progress March 25, 8-9am, to critique posters your colleagues will display at national
meetings of the Society of General Internal Medicine and the American Geriatrics Society. Please note a change of
location--for this special session only--to the Regenstrief Institute 5th floor classroom.
The IU Geriatrics Conference on April 2 features Cathy Schubert, MD, Geriatric Medicine Fellow. She will present
"Dementias other than Alzheimer's" in Wishard T2008 A&B from 7:30-8:30am.
The Clinical Rehabilitation Psychology program invites you to a colloquium on Friday, April 11, from 11:00 - 12:00,
when John L. Woodard, PhD, presents "Functional Neuroanatomy of Working Memory in Alzheimer's Disease and Healthy Aging."
Dr. Finch is Associate Professor of Psychology, Finch University of Health Sciences/The Chicago Medical School. The
colloquium will be held in IUPUI Science Building Room LD 136, next door to LD 137 classroom.
