PRESENTATIONS
Want to have interesting fun discussions and find out how other IUPUI scientists do their work? The IU Center for Aging Research has launched a new lecture series called SCORE which stands for Seeking Creativity to Optimize Research Endeavors. The goal of the series is to open our minds to research topics and methods outside our normal scope of work. Check the ANNOUNCEMENTS for the next SCORE presentation by Dr. Polly Baker.
In addition to Dr. Hendrie receiving the Senior Investigator Award, the IU Center for Aging Research had a strong presence at the 2005 American Association for Geriatric Psychiatry annual meeting.
Chris Callahan, MD, represented geriatric medicine as a discussant in two complex case presentations, “Depression and Executive Function” and “Depression versus Delirium.”
Malaz Boustani, MD, MPH, represented geriatric medicine as a discussant in multiple complex case presentations on “Delirium.”
Martin Farlow, MD, participated in the symposium “Cholinesterase Inhibitors Across Stages of Dementia and Cognitive Impairments in the Elderly.”
Mary Guerriero Austrom, PhD, and Hugh Hendrie presented a Retirees' Caucus interactive workshop entitled, "Retired Physicians and Their Spouses -- What Have We Learned from Surveys?".
Steve Lind, LCSW, geriatrics social worker from the IU Center for Senior Health at Wishard, presented “Caregiving: Harder Than it Seems, Easier Than it Looks--It's All Relative" at the Regenstrief Institute's Lunch and Learn Series on March 18, 2005 . The sessions are attended by Institute employees and faculty over the lunch hour in an effort to provide members with unique learning opportunities.

PROFESSIONAL ACTIVITIES
Chris Callahan, MD, reviewed grant proposals for the The 2005 Hartford Geriatrics Health Outcomes Research Scholars Award Program February 10-11, at the American Geriatric Society offices in New York City. This program supports physician-scientists committed to improving the health care of older adults during the critical transition from junior faculty to independent researcher. Research must be focused on older adults and may address clinical strategies and effectiveness, innovative outcomes measures, and quality of life.
Teresa Damush, PhD, was an ad hoc reviewer for the March 2005 Scientific Merit Review Board for the Health Services Research & Development service of the Veterans Health Service. She participated in the Chronic Disease Management & Behavioral Processes review of proposals on March 14 in San Antonio, Texas.
Chris Callahan was an invited participant in a “Strategic Planning Conference to Improve the Care of Older Adults by Generalist Physicians” held March 7-8 in Atlanta, Georgia. The event was sponsored by the Merck Institute of Aging & Health and the Society of General Internal Medicine. Participants are developing a blueprint of high priority projects and initiatives to be accomplished over the next three years to improve the care of older adults by practicing physicians. Participants also are identifying a working group to provide leadership in moving these projects forward.
