GRANT
Daniel Clark, PhD, has been awarded an R01 titled "Self Management Barriers & Resources Among Vulnerable Elders" by the National Institute on Aging.  Capitalizing on the NIA-funded study, Geriatric Resources for Assessment and Care of Elders (GRACE), the research seeks to identify barriers and facilitators for self-management and the education and support of self-management which are critical to implementing emerging chronic care models.
    Co-investigators are Chris Callahan, MD, Rich Frankel, PhD, and Matt Bair, MD, MS.

 

Usha Subramanian, MD, MS, received the VA Junior Investigator Award for research from the Indiana Institute for Medical Research. The $25,000 in funding supports, “Topic Development and Evaluation of a Decision Support Tool for Evidence-based Treatment of Type 2 Diabetes.”

PRESENTATIONS
Chris Callahan, MD, Hugh Hendrie, MB, ChB, DSc, and Mary Guerriero Austrom, PhD, attended the 2006 Annual Meeting of the American Association for Geriatric Psychiatry held March 10-13 in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
  
On March 10 Hugh presented “Pharmacological Management of Late-Life Depression: The IMPACT Experience” and Chris presented “Improving Care for Dementia in Primary Care” as part of the Distinguished Scientist Award Lectures that honored the winners of the 2006 AAGP scientist awards.
   
Mary and Hugh were faculty participants in the symposium “Psychosocial Aspects of Retirement for Physicians and Their Spouses” on March 11.
   
Chris presented an “Effectiveness of Guideline Level Care for Older Adults with Alzheimer Disease” during the March 12 new research paper session. On March 13 he presented “Origins of the Current Treatment Model for Depression in Primary Care” as faculty in the symposium Geriatric Depression in Primary Care: Update 2006. The symposium brought together experts in geriatric psychiatry and medicine to summarize the implications for practice of the burgeoning research literature on depression in primary care seniors.

Glenda Westmoreland, MD, MPH, presented the “Future of Geriatrics Education in Indiana” at the 17th Annual Geriatric Conference “State of Change: Aging in Indiana” held March 16, 2006 at the Ritz Charles. Dr. Westmoreland informed attendees of the innovative models of teaching geriatrics, such as Geripardy, Council of Elders, and GENI Players, being applied statewide as a part of the Geriatrics Education Network of Indiana (GENI) project funded by the Reynolds Foundation.

Kevin Terrell, DO, presented the poster “Challenges in Transitional Care between Nursing Homes and Emergency Departments” on March 17 at the American Medical Directors Association (AMDA) Annual Symposium held March 16-19 in Dallas, Texas . Kevin's co-investigator is Douglas K. Miller, MD. AMDA is the professional association of medical directors and physicians practicing in the long term care continuum. The paper is in press in the Journal of the American Medical Directors Association.

 

PROFESSIONAL ACTIVITIES
Gene Lammers, MD, MPH, and Dave Wilcox, MD have been appointed to a 3-year term on the Public Policy Advisory Group (PPAG) of the American Geriatrics Society after being nominated by Steve Counsell, MD, current Chair of PPAG.

Chris Callahan, MD, reviewed applications as a member of the Selection Committee for the Hartford Geriatrics Health Outcomes Research Scholars Awards Program on February 2-3, 2006 in New York City. This career development program supports physician-scientists committed to improving the health care of older adults during the critical transition from junior faculty to independent researcher and is supported by the John A. Hartford Foundation and the American Geriatrics Society Foundation for Health in Aging. 

Leo Solito, MD, Cathy Schubert, MD , Steve Counsell, MD , Alex Arizmendi, MD, Kevin Terrell, DO attended the American Medical Directors Association Annual Symposium held March 16-19 in Dallas, Texas. The theme was “Mastering the Challenges Across the Spectrum of Long Term Care.”

 

ANNOUNCEMENTS
The May 3rd IU Geriatrics Conference is cancelled due to the American Geriatrics Society Annual Meeting held May 3-7 in Chicago , IL .

Hua Gao, MD, PhD, will present “Age-Related Macular Degeneration” at the May 17th IU Geriatrics Conference held in Wishard T2008 A&B from 7:30-8:30am. Dr. Gao is assistant professor of ophthalmology and is director of the Vitreo-Retinal Diseases and Surgery Service.
