AWARDS
Dr. Hugh Hendrie joined a distinguished group of individuals who have been recognized for their dedication to Alzheimer's research when the Alzheimer's Association honored him on May 7, 2005 at the 18th Annual Chicago Rita Hayworth Gala held at the Civic Opera House in Chicago. The association noted “Dr. Hendrie's professional accomplishments span several decades as a practitioner, researcher, scholar, teacher and mentor. His extensive international research on epidemiology and risk factors for Alzheimer's disease and related disorders in cross-cultural populations earned Dr. Hendrie worldwide recognition as a pioneer in identifying modifiable risk factors for age-related brain diseases.”
An IUCAR and Regenstrief Institute tribute in the gala program noted, “…we offer Dr. Hendrie our highest praise and congratulations, in deep admiration and respect of his dedication to and success in improving the health and welfare of this large and vulnerable population.”

Malaz Boustani, MD, MPH, accepted a 2005 New Investigator Award for his abstract, “The Prevalence and Burden of Cognitive Impairment in Hospitalized Older Adults.”
Bruce Grau, RN, GNP, accepted the House Call Clinician of the Year Award presented by the American Academy of Home Care Physicians.
Steve Counsell, MD, accepted the Academy of Home Care Physicians Abstract of the Year Award for “Aging with GRACE: Improving the Quality of Care for Low-Income Seniors.” Co-authors were Callahan CM, Buttar AB, Ricketts G, Stump T, Bone C, Grau B, Shields C.

PRESENTATIONS
AGS – The American Geriatrics Society held its 2005 Annual Scientific Meeting May 11-15 in Orlando , Florida . The meeting is the premier educational event in geriatrics, providing the latest information on clinical care, research on aging, and innovative models of care delivery.
Attendees with ties to IU Geriatrics or IUCAR included Alejandro Arizmendi, Robin Beck, Carrie Bone, Malaz Boustani, Dawn Butler, Padma Chimata, Steve Counsell, Barb Dahlstrom, Meredith Devlin, Kathy Frank, Bruce Grau, Doug Miller, Gretchen Ricketts, Cheryl Shields, Leo Solito, Kevin Terrell, and Glenda Westmoreland. Malaz Boustani co-chaired the workshop entitled "Connecting the New Generation with the Geriatric experts: A Round-Table Discussion and Funding Opportunities" sponsored by the AGS Junior Faculty Special Interest Group Steering Committee.
Steve Counsell displayed the poster “Aging with GRACE: Physician Satisfaction with the GRACE Intervention” at the Presidential Poster Session.
Steve Counsell moderated the symposium “State Dual Eligible Programs: Evidence and Opportunities” and chaired the meeting of the Special Interest Group, “Health Care for Low-Income Seniors."
SGIM – The Society of General Internal Medicine held its 28 th Annual Meeting May 11-14 in New Orleans , Louisana. The following colleagues contributed to the meeting:
Chris Callahan, MD, attended meetings as an SGIM Council Member, participated in the One-on-One Mentoring Program and was a faculty participant in the precourse “Building and Sustaining A Research ‘Shop'”.

ANNOUNCEMENTS
The June 1 IU Geriatrics Conference features William C. Hine, Jr, DDS. His presentation, “Oral Health in Older Adults” will be held in Wishard T2008 A&B from 7:30-8:30am. Dr. Hine is director of the General Practice Residency and the Division of Hospital Dentistry in the Department of Oral Surgery and Hospital Dentistry, IU School of Dentistry.
Geriatric Medicine Fellow Leo Solito, MD, will present “Cancer in the Elderly: The Role of Geriatrics in Enhancing Care,” at the June 8th IU Geriatrics Conference held from 7:30-8:30am in Wishard T2008 A&B.
Malaz Boustani, MD, MPH, will present "Preventing and Managing Delirium” at the June 15 IU Geriatrics Conference held from 7:30-8:30am in Wishard T2008 A&B. Dr. Boustani is assistant professor of medicine, IUSM; center scientist, IU Center for Aging Research; and research scientist, Regenstrief Institute, Inc.
The June 29 IU Geriatrics Conference features Tom Zunica, MD. His presentation, “Podiatry Care in Older Adults,” will be held in Wishard T2008 A&B from 7:30-8:30am .
