The American Geriatrics Society held its 2006 Annual Scientific Meeting May 3-7 in Chicago, Illinois. Faculty and fellow attendees with ties to IU Geriatrics or the IU Center for Aging Research were Firas Barrow, Robin Beck, Malaz Boustani, Chris Callahan, Taseer Cheema, Steve Counsell, Richard Kennedy, Gene Lammers, Doug Miller, Youcef Sennour, Kevin Terrell, Mike Weiner, and Glenda Westmoreland, and Dave Wilcox.
IU Geriatrics continued the tradition of organizing the “Indiana Dinner” held May 4th at PF Chang's. Guests included AGS members who are affiliated with various hospitals and medical practices around Indiana, as well as our faculty and staff who attended the national meeting.
Malaz Boustani, MD, MPH, was the lead author and presented the following posters:
“Effective Implementation of a Computerized Decision Support System for the Care of Hospitalized Older Adults with Cognitive Impairment: The e-CHAMP Study” with co-authors Stephanie Munger and Chris Callahan.
“Patients' Perceptions About Dementia Screening in the UK and the USA” with co-authors Christopher Fox, Cornelius Katona, Emma Scott, Tony Perkins Lea Watson, Bridget Fultz, Mary Austrom, Siu Hui, Fred Unverzagt, Chris Callahan, and Hugh Hendrie.
“Factors Associated With ED Visits and Hospitalization Among Alzheimer's Disease Patients And Their Caregivers” with co-authors Chris Callahan, Fred Unverzagt, Tony Perkins, Mary Austrom, Siu Hui, and Hugh Hendrie.
The poster “What Do Healthy Older Adults Think about Dementia Screening?” was presented at the Presidential Poster Session. Authors were Lea Watson, John Hopkins, Malaz Boustani, Tony Perkins, Patrick Monahan, Christopher Fox, and Emma Scott.
Malaz chaired a Special Interest Group meeting on Clinical Research in Dementia and the Special Interest Group on Junior Research Faculty Development. The title of the latter was Connecting the New Generation with Geriatrics Experts: A Round-Table Discussion & Funding Workshop.
Chris Callahan, MD, presented an oral presentation in the Plenary Paper Session of “Effectiveness of Collaborative Care for Alzheimer Disease: The PREVENT Trial” which described new original research in geriatrics focusing on clinical trials.
Chris presented “Geriatric Medicine in Primary Care: Translating Dementia Research into Quality Clinical Care” for the symposium Geriatric Medicine: Shaping the Future of Dementia Clinical Care and Research. He also was an abstract session moderator and chaired an abstract session on clinical trials.
Kevin Terrell, DO, MS, presented a poster entitled “Computer-Assisted Decision Support to Increase the Safety of Prescribing to Older Emergency Department Patients” at the meetings of the Council of the Section on Surgical and Related Medical Specialties and of the Section on Surgical and Related Medical Specialties. The meetings are a part of the Dennis W. Jahnigen Career Development Scholars Meeting, which is held annually in conjunction with the AGS meeting. Co-authors on the poster were Doug Miller, Chris Callahan, Tony Perkins, Greg Abernathy, Paul Dexter, and Rolly McGrath.
Steve Counsell, MD, chaired a meeting Health Care for Low-Income Seniors AGS Special Interest Group which included presentations on "The AD-LIFE Study: After Discharge Care Management of Low-Income Frail Elderly" by Dr. Kyle Allen from Summa Health System, Akron, OH ; "SOURCE: A Georgia Medicaid Primary Care Case Management Model for Community-Based Long-Term Care" by Dr. Laurent Adler from Emory University, Atlanta, GA; and "Deficit Reduction Act of 2005: Expanded Access to Medicaid Home and Community-Based Services" by Emily Hancock, PharmD, Director of Long-Term Care Policy, Indiana Office of Medicaid Policy and Planning."
In the Presidential Poster Session, Douglas K. Miller, MD, presented “Short Portable Sarcopenia Measure: Development, Construct Validation, and Predictors of Change in the African American Health Project.” Co-authors were Ted Malmstrom and Fred Wolinsky.
Doug was a discussant in the workshop titled, Recruitment and Retention Issues in Aging Research, on the panel for “Recruitment Issues in Various Study Settings.”
Mike Weiner, MD, MPH, presented a poster titled, “Variation in Implementation of Recommendations of Inpatient Geriatrics Consultation.” His co-authors were Vickie Lamar, Stephanie Munger, Tony Perkins, Bridget Fultz, Margo Wheeler, Steve Counsell, Youcef Sennour and Chris Callahan.
Glenda Westmoreland, MD, MPH, presented two posters. The first was “Caring for Elders (CARE) Retreat: A New Method for Geriatrics Residency Training.” Co-authors were Steve Counsell, Deb Litzelman, Tom Inui, Stephen Bogdewic, Rich Frankel, and Kathy Frank.

The Society of General Internal Medicine held its 29th Annual Meeting April 26-29 in Los Angeles, California. The meeting's theme, "Activism to Promote the Health of Patients and the Public," took on global significance with nearly 1,700 people attending from the US, Taiwan, Switzerland, New Zealand, Japan, Canada, Brazil, Argentina, China, Yugoslavia and Australia.
Faculty attendees with ties to IU Geriatrics were Steve Counsell, Glenda Westmoreland, Usha Subramanian, Michael Weiner, and Chris Callahan.
A highlight of the SGIM meeting for IU Geriatrics was Chris Callahan receiving the 2006 Society of General Internal Medicine Mid-Career Research Mentorship Award. He was nominated for the society's newest award by Division Chief Bill Tierney and by Mike Weiner and Malaz Boustani who are participants in Chris' professional development program. The award honors an outstanding clinician investigator who is actively engaged in research and mentorship of junior investigators.
Glenda Westmoreland, MD, MPH, was a moderator and presenter for Using Geriatrics to Teach the ACGME Core Competencies , a session that described how to use the Accreditation for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) competencies to teach geriatrics to residents. The session included discussion about the POGOe web site (Postal of Geriatrics Online Education).
Glenda was a small group facilitator for the Geriatrics Interest Group sponsored workshop, Driving Me Crazy? A Sane Approach to the Older Adult Driver.
Mike Weiner, MD, MPH, presented the poster, “A pilot study of home-based self-management of osteoarthritis among older adults using adaptive turnaround documents.” Co-authors were Paul Biondich, Bridget Fultz , Meaghan Zore, Vibha Anand, Rashid Owoyele, Tony Perkins, Dennis Ang, Steve Downs, Chris Callahan, and Dan Clark .
Mike also was a facilitator at the workshop New Medicare Part D Benefit & the Primary Care Physician: What You and Your Patients Need to Know which was conducted by members of SGIM's Geriatrics Interest Group.
Usha Subramanian, MD, MS, made an oral presentation of “Knowledge of Blood Pressure Targets and Blood Pressure Self-Monitoring among Patients with Diabetes.” Co-authors were M Klamerus, Hofer, B Zikmund-Fisher, M Heisler and EA Kerr.
Usha also presented a poster, “Impact of a Strategy for Managing Pharmaceutical Costs in an Outpatient VA Medical Center.” Co-authors were M Jones, JR Curtis, T Stavenger, TR Emmendorfer and JP Walsh.

Chris judged abstracts for the Visiting Professor Program in Geriatrics and Gerontology (VPPGG) geriatric abstract session and for the Walking Poster Session. The VPPGG raises the visibility of aging-related research and education among SGIM members, particularly junior faculty, fellows, and other trainees. |
