The Hulman Health Achievement Awards create a positive image of health and provide a forum for greater awareness of the contributions of Indiana's health leaders. A commemorative plaque highlighted the contributions for which Dr. Counsell was honored:
  • For exemplary foresight and recognition of unmet needs of senior citizens and their access to medical care;
  • For designing an innovative system of care for vulnerable, older adults to address specific local health care needs and serve as a national model;
  • For developing a model program that includes
    • inpatient acute care for the elderly,
    • a multi-specialty outpatient clinic for senior health staffed by geriatric physicians, nurse specialists, social workers, and other specialty geriatric service providers,
    • an extended care program for older adults in skilled nursing facilities
    • home visits to older adults,
    • a community outreach program, "Senior Connection," that provides health education and facilitates preventive and self care of older adults in the local community;
  • For building a state-of-the-art geriatric clinical program to support the training of the next generation of Indiana physicians in the principles of geriatric care, fostering a collaborative and collegial environment as part of the educational experience in geriatrics;
  • For conducting novel research to develop treatment strategies for common geriatric syndromes;
  • For assuring the continuation of the pioneer geriatric work of B. L. Martz, M.D.;
  • For excellence and creativity in the development of a comprehensive geriatric health model.
